Pentagon Report Finds Defense Secretary Put Troops in Danger with Signal Conversation.

A long-awaited Department of Defense report has determined that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth violated departmental policies by sharing secret information in a private Signal group, according to a source familiar with the report.

Particulars of the Event

The chat group in question included particulars about a planned airstrike in Yemen against Houthi militants. This discussion came to light after a journalist for the Atlantic was included as a participant.

Other officials in the chat reportedly included Senator JD Vance, CIA director John Ratcliffe, and former security advisor Mike Waltz. The report focused solely on the conduct of Hegseth, as the other officials do not work at the Department of Defense.

Signal is a publicly available communication application that was not approved for transmitting sensitive material.

Serious Risk to Forces

The internal investigation found that the intelligence shared by Hegseth was secret and could have endangered the safety of US troops if it had been intercepted by a foreign enemy force.

Notably, the report also noted that Hegseth possessed the authority to declassify the material he distributed, though it was not specified whether he formally exercised that authority.

Secretary's Reaction

The informed individual indicated that Hegseth declined an interview by the inspector general. Instead, he provided a short written response.

In his response, Hegseth asserted he only shared information that would not have risked lives or compromised the operation. He further stated that he possessed the authority to downgrade information and viewed the inspector general to be partisan.

Next Steps

The completed report has been provided to lawmakers. An publicly releasable copy is expected to be made public later this week.
